CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND WATER GOVERNANCE: THE NEW RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PARADIGM
13 September to 19 September 2021
Circular economy is an economic concept that is related to sustainability and aims to keep products, materials and resources (water, paper, energy) value for a long time in economy and to minimise waste generation. This course will present some contemporary ideas for water reuse as a basis for circular economy. Circular economy is a growing internationally accepted concept, which is directly linked to sustainability, as its main objective is to reduce waste generation to a minimum.
For the water sector, the concept of circular economy is specified in making the technical cycle of water use as similar as possible to its natural hydrological cycle.
Regarding water governance, it can be explained as the study of regulation of activities to obtain water resources through non-conventional methods such as desalination, purification and reuse of water. It also examines in depth the regulatory instruments of major infrastructures that make it possible to achieve water balances between Spanish demarcations, such as transfers. Therefore, students are expected to be familiar with the main basic concept related to water governance.
By the end of the course, students should be familiar with the concept of a new, non-linear, circular economy based on the principles of closing the life cycle of products, services, waste, materials, water and energy.
