COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will provide an overview of the current situation regarding water desalination technology for agricultural and urban uses, showing its basic aspects from a technological, economic and environmental perspective, with special emphasis on large reverse osmosis installations using seawater.

Recent Spanish experiences on large-scale desalination facilities will also be presented, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages, and the role that this technology can play within integrated water resource systems, especially in areas of scarcity.

The course will be independent. The course is also aimed at those with some background in the field of water reuse, provided that they may also be interested in broadening their professional horizon.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, students are expected to recognise the existing types of technology used in water desalination, as well as to know its process with a special focus on agricultural uses and urban areas. In addition, the student will acquire knowledge about basic concepts related to reverse osmosis technology, such as chemical and physical pretreatment, high-pressure pumping, energy recovery, etc.

The provided content (reading and audio/video materials) will be uploaded on the virtual campus and will be available to students for a period of 7 days/week.

METHODOLOGY AND SCHEDULE

In addition to the online video material provided, students will have the opportunity to extend their knowledge through further reading. Reading, in fact, is mandatory to achieve full understanding of the course. Furthermore, there will be two individual 5 question assignments, which will be necessary for students to progress and move on to the next chapter of the course.
